ZM0045 Make-over 101

People always come to me and tell me

"Jon. *long pause* I NEED A MAKE-OVER! C'MON, HELP ME IN THIS!"

"Eh, during the holiday, help me to look pretty for my boyfriend, can?"

And the truth is, I can't help you if you're do not D.U.C.K, or transform into a duck.

Firstly.

D - Decide

Everything comes with decision making and you know what, if you don't decide, ask God to take you back home (Even that's a decision!).

How you gonna live, what you gonna eat, what you gonna wear, what reputation are you putting up front - it is completely up to you.

So, first of, decide that you really want a make-over. Nobody can force you into doing something you don't like, and truly, nobody will force you unless they are your maternal mother!

Your decision is a promise you give to yourself. A subtle motivation.

And once you have decided, DON'T EVER BACK DOWN..!

Be a man and take charge of your own life.

U - Utilize

Check what you have in your wardrobe or your pile of collection. Have a spring cleaning, just that it's not really cleaning, more like CLEARing.

Throw all non-usable items together with the trash.

And all reusable items can be thrown aside and await for further enhancement, improvement.

Make sure you don't go soft-hearted on this.

"But it has sentimental value! My ex-gf sewed this for me."

THE MORE YOU SHOULD RECYCLE IT. What if your current gf sees it?!

"But but, my mom bought this from Thailand ley!"

Harlow?! Thailand. *squint*

Things from Thailand are really 2 extremes. Either they are really fantastic looking, or they look like rag. And for the people who see you wearing it will either die over it, or die because of it.

A real man doesn't keep rubbish!

Moving on, try on the items if you think they look appropriate.

If you bought the shirt 10years ago when you were 20kg heavier, (I assume you are the slimmer you now, ok?) then forget it, throw. Cause' it will never fit you anyway.

However, if you are the heavier you now, you might wanna stop at 'D' and decide to hit the gym for some weight loss solutions before hand.

C- Cash

Yes, and I'm being realistic. You can't buy anything without anything from your wallet. And Barter system no longer works. (Keep that chicken of yours please)

Make sure you've already worked long and hard, put that hard-earned cash into good use, which is to make yourself look better.

This is always the most exciting yet tough part.

You have the money, you are eager to shop, just that you don't know what to buy.

This is when you need a friend who has fashion sense to help you. Not necessarily you have to get the latest collections, but get something that suits your style but not your old style.

Go for something you think you would look good in, and it won't make you look stupid. Something comfortable for your fitting but not something from your comfort zone where you get the same old stuff exactly similar as your old closet.

Do not however think make over is equivalent to 180 degrees of change (or 360), perform the change not too rapid.

Let me enlighten you on a few things which I think is in-trend now. For guys. =)

Skinny jeans (Fine. Girls too)
Shades
Tote bags
Hoodie
Vest
Slim ties
Scarfs
Shorts
Big-buckle belts

And please discover your own style.

Some guys look really good with just polo tee and jeans, some look even better with a simple print tee and baggy pants, or body-fitting shirt and slacks.

Don't rush into purchasing an item you think it'll look good on you, ask for opinions, pause and think. Don't be a compulsive shopper.

Not just what you wear, what about your hair?

Always go for a hairstylist that tells you what he/she is doing to your hair. Tell them you would like to change your style and ask them what styles can they suggest.

A few aspects hairstylists will look at:

-Shape of your head
-The length of your hair
-Hair texture (whether is it naturally curly, or super straight)
-Colouration
-Your age

, and others, which helps define your most suitable style.

I'm sure as a guy, you would be one who already has the bread-winner mentality. Don't have the cash, go look for some. Resist asking money from your mum, please!

K- Knock their socks off!

(Phrase introduced by Tim Gunn )

One way to show that you look comfortable in what you wear is to appear confident. And fakers can be easily identified.

Sometimes I see girls who wear mini-skirts but rather always pulling the end of their skirts downwards to try to cover as much thigh-exposure as possible, then might as well don't wear. Correct or not?!

Just be natural. Walk like you are a self-hired supermodel. But don't gesture like a snob lah.

But if you wear like this, don't even try to be confident, CAUSE' MY PALM WILL FLY STRAIGHT TO YOUR FACE.

I mean, it's not even a usual style. Yea, you may say a new style is always introduced by an unusual style.

Okay, whatever. Which century are you from again? Or should I ask, which planet.

So, alright. That's about it.

Lastly, be initiative in checking out what is the latest collection. I always walk into famous designer outlets just to have a look at their latest style.

Here's a good start. Have a look at a men's fashion show. Just don't imitate the way these models walk. Quite sucky. LOL.

Enjoy your own make over! Have fun. It is not a chore. Enhance your look, it'll boost your self confidence, making you a better and more relevant member of the society. Don't be ashamed to go for a new look. Nobody will laugh at you, even if they do, they are only jealous of you.

All the best!

And remember:

Be reasonable, be rational and be logical.
